Architects, engineers and designers: Have you wondered about the forestry behind Maine wood, how wood gets to market, and who brings wood to the mill and the lumberyard? Local Wood WORKS invites you to participate in a professional workshop for design and engineering professionals focused on: growing Maine’s local wood economy; sustainable forestry practices; and forestland conservation. Seven professional credits available through AIA. Cost per participant includes transportation and lunch. $100, Registration limited to 20 participants. Bus departs from Portland at 7:30 a.m Thursday, November 7, and returns at 5:00 p.m.
Saco Manufacturing
Arrive Saco Manufacturing, 39 Lincoln Street, Saco
We will meet with owner Tony Jondrek who will share the story of the company’s nearly 150-year history and transitions while continuing to operate in the same space. Founded in 1872 as a manufacturer of wooden water pumps, the company now manufacturers wooden columns, spindles, balusters and spires.
Pleasant River Pine
Arrive Pleasant River Pine, 563 New Dam Road, Sanford
Plant manager Jamie Fall will give us a tour of a high-production saw mill that converts pine saw logs into boards and pattern siding for markets up and down the East Coast.
Wood & Son
Arrive Wood & Son, 36 Lefrancois Lane, Sanford
Owner Tony Wood who will give us a tour of a plant that produces wood pellet fuel from the residues of the adjacent saw mill. He'll describe his business's his family's history in the wood business and why he returned to the family business to lead it into a new era.
Arrive Ecology School, 184 Simpson Road, Saco
Lunch in Conference room at Ecology School. This will include presentations by Theresa Kerchner, Lloyd Irland (supply networks, etc) and Ken Laustsen (sustainability).
Tour Ecology School. Director Drew Dumsch will give us a tour of a new dormitory and dining commons and describe his school’s decision to pioneer Maine’s first Living Building Challenge project. The low-carbon construction model that raises the bar on sustainable construction and relies heavily on locally sourced wood.

Timber harvest site to be determined. A member of Professional Logging Contractors of Maine will demonstrate how timber is harvested in Maine and what sustainble forestry looks like.
